Chapter Eight

When I’d seen the Karima sisters rush out of A Charming Cure when Martha passed out and the Order of Elders showed up, I knew Oscar wasn’t going to be happy with me.

I didn’t need my intuition to tell me he was questioning why I’d not gone to him first thing after Roma was found dead. And when I finished telling him about Eloise’s and my going to Roma’s motel room, I thought he was going to lose his mind.

“You’re pregnant.” Though he didn’t yell, the words did seethe out of his gritted teeth as he stomped back and forth in our family room. “Don’t you know it’s different now?”

I tucked one of the couch pillows under my arms and held it tight against Little One and me. If he was going to yell at me, I didn’t want the baby to hear. Mr. Prince Charming already had a scowl on his face, just waiting to pounce on Oscar.

“I had Mr. Prince Charming with me,” I repeated when there was a window of opportunity when Oscar had come up for air during his lecture.

“You have to think of others and not just yourself. That’s my baby too.” He jutted his pointer finger at me. “I don’t care if you had a cat there. That’s my kid.”

“It’s also mine, and do you honestly think I’d ever put us in danger?” I questioned him and held up my hand for him to hush while I said my piece. “Eloise was there. Your aunt, who is worlds smarter than we are when it comes to this world we are living in. Dr. Sebastian was there just in case something went wrong with the baby.” I wagged a finger when he went to protest. “And Sonny was there. He would never let anything happen to me.”

Oscar stared at me in silence. He bent down, curling his hands over his head, and brought his head between his knees.

He screamed in pain before he looked up at me with tears in his eyes.

“Don’t you know how much I love you? This is our baby. Our love.” He stood up, walked over to me, and bent down in front of me, taking the pillow away. He placed both of his hands on Little One. “Don’t you know how much I have to keep you two safe? You’re my world.”

Gently, I took his head and held it against my stomach, trying hard to console him. His worry and hurt were like electricity in my veins. When he hurt, I could feel it to my core. It was a gift I’d always had with Oscar long before we were married.

“I’ll be safe. But, Oscar…” I took my finger and put it under his chin to lift his head up to look at me. “You were warned before we got married that I was the Chosen One. We didn’t really know what that was, but as the years have ticked by, it’s become apparent that I’m to be involved with keeping our world a secret.
